BEN SMITH RECRUITS COMMS TEAM FOR USA CHALLENGE

17th January 2020

British ultra-endurance runner Ben Smith is looking for experienced, hands-on communications professionals to support his epic 14,001-mile challenge across the USA for charity.

The Portishead-based adventurer is planning to run 50 marathons, one in each of the 50 US state capitals, in just 104 days.

On a route that will take him from Maine to Hawaii, the 37-year-old will also be cycling between each stage to ensure he completes his ‘USA 2020 Challenge’ between July and October.

Smith is hoping to raise £1million for two UK-based charities, The 401 Foundation and the Youth Sport Trust, both of which use the power of sport and physical activity to help improve people’s health and wellbeing.

As part of his support team based in both the UK and the USA, Smith is recruiting two PR & Media Managers and two Digital Content Creators.

Each role would be voluntary for two months with all expenses and travel costs covered by the organisers of the USA 2020 Challenge.

Smith said: “I am so excited to be building a team of individuals that ultimately will be responsible for ensuring this challenge is a success. It’s a unique and rewarding experience, one that doesn’t come up too often.”

Through the ‘USA 2020 Challenge’, the Youth Sport Trust and The 401 Foundation are also giving thousands of schools free education resources which offer a programme of wellbeing activities for children and young people.

Smith’s American adventure is not the first time he has taken on an endurance challenge to raise money for charity. In 2015, the Founder of The 401 Challenge ran 401 marathons around the UK in 401 days for Stonewall and Kidscape.

His incredible feat, which raised more than £330,000, saw him honoured with the Helen Rollason Award at the 2016 BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony for outstanding achievement in the face of adversity. He also won ITV’s Fundraiser of the Year at the Mirror Pride of Britain Awards.
