Your Traffic Isn’t the Problem. Your Conversion Rate Is.

12th August 2026

MARKETING INSIGHT:

Why performance marketing, SEO and conversion rate optimisation only really work when they work together — and what that’s costing marketers who treat them separately.

Somewhere in your marketing dashboard right now is a number that should be keeping you up at night. It isn’t your CPC. It isn’t your keyword rankings. It’s your conversion rate, and there’s a good chance nobody in your business has properly interrogated it in months.

If that lands a bit close to home, you’re in good company. It’s the blind spot that catches out even sharp, experienced marketers: the budget goes into paid media, the hours go into SEO, the reporting gets scrutinised line by line, and all of it pours into a website that was never actually built, tested or designed to convert.

You’ve done the hard part. Getting people through the door. What happens once they’re inside is where the real money is won or lost.

The traffic trap

Neil Patel, one of the most followed voices in digital marketing, puts it bluntly: most businesses think they have a traffic problem, when what they actually have is a conversion problem. It’s become something of a mantra for his team at NP Digital, who’ve applied that thinking across more than 3,000 landing pages — not through one-off redesigns, but through constant, iterative testing, driven by data rather than opinion.

It’s a principle we’ve built our own agency around. Get more visitors to a website that doesn’t convert, and all you’ve done is find a faster way to lose money. The gap between traffic and revenue is where budgets quietly disappear, and it’s bigger than most marketing teams realise.

The traffic trap, in numbers:

  • The global average ecommerce conversion rate sits at just 3.76%, with most sectors converting somewhere between 2% and 5%.
  • Cart abandonment topped 70% globally in 2025 — meaning most of the traffic you’ve paid for walks away at the final hurdle.
  • A page that loads in one second converts three times better than one that takes five — and a delay of just 100 milliseconds can cut conversions by up to 7%.

Where paid media, SEO and CRO actually meet

Think of it as a chain, not three separate jobs. SEO and paid media get people into the room. CRO is what happens once they’re standing in it — whether the message is clear, whether the journey makes sense, whether there’s an obvious reason to act now rather than leave and never come back. If the room’s a mess, it doesn’t matter how many people you’ve persuaded to walk through the door.

This is also where CRO quietly makes your other channels more efficient. Every percentage point of extra conversion is a percentage point of extra return on the media spend and the SEO investment you’ve already made — no additional traffic required. Independently tracked agency data from 2020–2025 puts this in stark terms: PPC optimisation projects delivered conversion gains of between 22% and 305%, Google Ads campaign optimisation added 55–210%, and ecommerce and Shopify-focused CRO work achieved lifts of up to 295%.

“Most businesses think they have a traffic problem. They actually have a conversion problem.”

— Neil Patel, NP Digital

Put simply: fixing conversion is very often faster, cheaper and more reliable than fighting for more traffic. And when your SEO rankings and your paid campaigns are already working hard, a site that converts better turns that existing effort into meaningfully more revenue — without spending another pound on acquisition.

What the data says, by website type

The size of the opportunity depends on what kind of site you’re running, but in every case, it’s bigger than most teams assume.

Brochure and lead-generation sites

  • The average landing page converts at 9.7% across industries — yet most brochure sites, built to look good rather than to convert, sit well below that benchmark without anyone noticing.

B2B

  • 75% of B2B marketers rate conversion rate as a key performance metric, and 57% call it the single most useful signal for judging how a landing page is really performing.
  • Even so, B2B ecommerce conversion typically hovers around 4% — with plenty of sites converting well below that once you strip out branded, high-intent traffic.

Ecommerce

  • Global ecommerce conversion averages 3.76%, but targeted CRO programmes have driven ecommerce lifts of up to 295% in independently tracked campaigns.
  • Desktop shoppers convert at roughly 3.2% versus 2.8% on mobile — despite mobile now accounting for over 60% of all website traffic.

Want to know where you stand?

Before you spend another pound on traffic, it’s worth knowing whether your website can actually convert it. That’s exactly what a health check is for — a plain-English grading of your site, with the areas costing you conversions right now flagged clearly, so you know what to fix first and what can wait.

Why Bopgun

We’ve spent seventeen years watching this play out — for good reason. Bopgun was founded in Bristol in 2008 by Jonathan Taylor and David Mathews, who between them spent over a decade at Future Publishing before setting out to solve a problem they kept seeing repeated across the industry: brilliant brands, strong traffic, websites quietly under-delivering. Since then we’ve worked with some of the UK’s best-known names, including the BBC, Sky, Sainsbury’s, Santander, HarperCollins and Heineken, alongside ambitious independent and B2B businesses building their first serious digital presence.

What sets us apart isn’t a specialism in one discipline — it’s that we hold all three under one roof: Data, Design and Digital. We dig into the analytics and behavioural evidence before we touch a pixel, so decisions are based on what visitors actually do, not what looks good in a pitch deck. We design the fix around real user behaviour rather than trend-chasing aesthetics. And we build it properly, with performance, technical SEO and Core Web Vitals treated as part of the conversion story, not an afterthought handed to someone else.

For businesses who want that thinking applied continuously rather than as a one-off project, our Evolve programme keeps a full data, design and development team working on your site month after month — testing, learning and compounding results over time, backed by measurable revenue impact rather than guesswork.

If you’re a marketer who’s tired of watching hard-won traffic disappear without converting, let’s talk. We’ll show you exactly where your site is leaking revenue, and what to do about it first.

Why the dog picture? Well, like Fiddich the whippet, a lot of people are confused about this! And, why not!
