If you have not been to one of our events before, MotherBoard is a community, event series and charter for everyone who believes we need more support for women working in the tech industry. We encourage everybody to join who is interested in understanding more about how to drive inclusion in the workplace.

Six Degrees is a female-only community for growth orientated women. Founded just under a year ago in Exeter, this ambitious community has chosen Bristol as its second home!

The first speaker at the Six Degrees Evening Soiree is the wonderful Emily McGuirk. Emily is the UK Mindset Champion and Community Leader for Six Degrees South West, Author of Mindful Mondays, Founder of Small Steps Big Vision and was awarded the Prestigious Heropreneur of The Year in December 2022, by the veteran’s charity Heropreneurs. She also won the lightning pitch competition, judged by Simon Squibb and JP Morgan representatives.

As an actress in the early stages of her career, everyone assumed she was confident and happy. However, what nobody realised, least of all Emily, was how her confidence and self-worth had been being chipped away for over 10 years. Fast forward to 2016, Emily found herself in hospital, pregnant and unable to breathe because of a severe panic attack.

It all stemmed from not feeling enough. Not worthy enough of happiness, good enough to be accepted, pretty enough, smart enough, successful enough, and the list goes on. She had lost sight of who she really was due to the opinions of others. When she was told that she had to make some serious changes to her mindset and her personal life to ensure the health of both her and her baby, her journey towards self-love began.

Emily will be sharing her story and lots of the daily practices that she did then to get better before her son was born, and that she still does daily to stay healthy and to be able to honestly say that she loves who she is. Whether it is you or someone you care about dearly that has a habit of being unkind to themselves, this is your permission slip to make a change, celebrate and accept every part of you.

Emily’s hope with both Six Degrees and Small Steps Big Vision, is that nobody ever feels like they don’t matter.

Topic: This month’s theme is ‘Saying YES to adventure’ so get ready to be inspired!

The Six Degrees evening soirees are renowned for being inspiring and a LOT of fun, so if you’re looking for something to pick you up, keep you on a roll or you just want to surround yourself with brilliant women in a swanky venue then hit come along!

What to expect at a glance

More about our ‘Wake Up Call’ webinar series

These sessions take place every other Friday morning from 8.30-9am, for the BCI community to share their pearls of wisdom with one another. The half hour webinars will involve a 15 minute presentation followed by a 10 minute facilitated Q&A, with introductions from the BCI team.

Our community is full of such amazing talent so we’re giving members the stage to talk about things that excite them so they can inspire their peers. The sessions will be a mix of expert tips and tricks and case studies – the perfect opportunity to learn something new before the week is out.

Our usual online format is an interactive ‘meeting’ but for this series we’re running webinars so that it’s easy to listen in while prepping for the day ahead or while having your breakfast! Cameras and mics will be off but you can ask your questions through the chat box or submit them beforehand.

Please get in touch with Sian if you’re interested in speaking at a future session.
