The Digital Cultures Research Centre (DCRC, UWE) are delighted to host, alongside the Moving Image Research Group, UWE, Prof. Justin O’Connor for the launch of his new book, Culture is not an industry: Reclaiming art and culture for the common good.

Culture is at the heart to what it means to be human. But twenty-five years ago, the British government rebranded art and culture as ‘creative industries’, valued for their economic contribution, and set out to launch the UK as the creative workshop of a globalised world.

Where does that leave art and culture now? Facing exhausted workers and a lack of funding and vision, culture finds itself in the grip of accountancy firms, creativity gurus and Ted Talkers. At a time of sweeping geo-political turmoil, culture has been de-politicised, its radical energies reduced to factors of industrial production. This book is about what happens when an essential part of our democratic citizenship, fundamental to our human rights, is reduced to an industry.

Culture is not an industry argues that art and culture need to renew their social contract and re-align with the radical agenda for a more equitable future. Bold and uncompromising, the book offers a powerful vision for change.

Justin will be visiting from the University of South Australia to join us for this, and he will be in conversation with Dr Steve Presence, Associate Professor of Film Studies at UWE. Tickets cost £6, which includes a glass of wine or a soft drink and £2 off the book.

This Event: Hacking the Herd Mind

Speaker: Ed Barter – Herdify

Understanding how people respond to content is vital to designing marketing campaigns that make an impact. But humans rarely think for themselves. As Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman put it “Thinking is to humans as swimming is to cats; they can do it but they’d prefer not to.”. Through social influence our friends, families, colleagues, and neighbours affect how we respond to marketing much more than we would ever give them credit for. In this talk Ed will explain the science behind social influence and how as marketers we can apply simple techniques to harness this herd mentality.

Agenda:

5:30 pm – Doors Open: Begin the evening with networking over drinks in a warm, welcoming setting.

6:00 pm – Kickoff: Introduction followed by insightful talks and interactive Q&A sessions.

6:45 pm – Continued Networking: Engage in meaningful discussions and connect with fellow attendees in a relaxed environment.

7:30 pm – Close: Conclude the evening enriched with new contacts, ideas, and perspectives in business.

Join us at the Plugged Series for an enriching night filled with learning, networking, and inspiration, all centered around the intriguing world of creativity.

JonesMillbank, a Bristol-based video production company, have been responding to tenders and public opportunities since 2016. Their ‘big break’ came in 2017 when they won a £150,000 contract with the University of Bristol. They were a team of 5 then, 14 today, and in that time they’ve done over £1mil’s worth of tendered work with the likes of the British Library, NHS England, VisitBritain and University of Winchester.

In this Wake Up Call, Russell Jones will rapidly cover some dos, don’ts and need to knows, from where the hell you find opportunities in the first place, to red flags, tips, tricks, how AI can help, and why this seemingly boring process isn’t all that bad and can have positive impacts on the normal pitching process.

This session will be particularly useful to owners of small digital agencies, pitch writers, business development, freelancers. Any creative/marketing/comms sector, from photography to SEO, web design and PR.

About Russell

Russell is one of the Co-Founders of JonesMillbank. Aside from film he’s also not terrible at writing, and so has found himself in the position of having responded to something like 50 odd tenders. Away from tenders he looks after ops and certifications, areas that naturally benefit from the sometimes rigorous, detailed process of tenders.

More about our ‘Wake Up Call’ webinar series

These sessions take place every other Friday morning from 8.30-9am, for the BCI community to share their pearls of wisdom with one another. The half hour webinars will involve a 15 minute presentation followed by a 10 minute facilitated Q&A, with introductions from the BCI team.

Our community is full of such amazing talent so we’re giving members the stage to talk about things that excite them so they can inspire their peers. The sessions will be a mix of expert tips and tricks and case studies – the perfect opportunity to learn something new before the week is out.

Our usual online format is an interactive ‘meeting’ but for this series we’re running webinars so that it’s easy to listen in while prepping for the day ahead or while having your breakfast! Cameras and mics will be off but you can ask your questions through the chat box or submit them beforehand.

Please get in touch with Sian if you’re interested in speaking at a future session.
