A series of short talks for the design community from the following speakers, who will introduce their diverse practices in graphic design. This will be followed by an open conversation and Q&A.

Kelly Walters (The Black Experience in Design) Kelly’s practice includes teaching, writing and experimental publishing, with a particular focus on race and representation in design. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Communication Design in Parsons School of Design at The New School in New York, and has co-authored The Black Experience in Design: Identity, Expression & Reflection. (Kelly will be joining us online)

Kaleena Sales (Extra Bold) Kaleena is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design and Chair of the Department of Art & Design at Tennessee State University. Her design writing and research centres on Black culture and aesthetics. She recently co-authored the book Extra-Bold: A Feminist, Inclusive, Anti-Racist, Non-Binary Field Guide for Graphic Designers.

Nina Paim (Futuress) Nina is a Brazilian designer, editor, curator, and educator based in Porto, Portugal. Her work revolves around notions of directing, supporting, and collaborating. A three-time recipient of the Swiss Design Award, Nina co-founded the feminist platform for design politics Futuress in 2020, which she currently co-directs. (Nina will be joining us online)

Arjun Harrison-Mann (Studio Hyte) Arjun is a London-based designer, activist and co-founder of Studio Hyte. His practice currently engages in the ongoing Disability Benefit Cuts that are taking place in the UK, collaborating with DPAC (Disabled People Against Cuts) in order to create tools to facilitate alternative protest for deaf and disabled people.

Zed Gregory (They Them Studio) Zed is a queer graphic designer and runs They Them Studio from an old newspaper office by the sea. They work almost exclusively for queer individuals, queer run organisations or on queer projects for universities. They are also the co-director of Trans Pride Hastings.

During the event we will be joined by community groups and organisations from the Southwest of England working across intersectional practices to enhance the conversations we are having about Bristol’s role in graphic design.
