Aspiring Graphic Designer Transitioned from Engineering to Graphic Design

Member Bio

Who am I?

I am a 25-year-old Filipino who moved to the UK when I was around 6 years old.

It was a tough time when I moved to a new country back when I was younger, but I have always found myself to be the creative type. I was drawing and creating Hot-Wheel cars when I was small. I was also creating art and designs when I was in GCSEs as well, pushing myself to get the highest grade possible in GCSE Graphic Design which I did get.

Why did you transition from Engineering to Graphic Design?

I have always wanted to become a graphic designer when I was around 16 years old, but never really stepped up to what I wanted to do at that age.

Trying to balance A-Level Graphic Design, Product Design, Creative Media and A-Level Maths at that stage of my life was way too much. Stress and time management were a real issue, alongside my mental health.

So, I decided to go for a BTEC in engineering (alongside A-Level Maths), as I thought engineering was still problem-solving but more to a specification rather than thinking about the client’s needs and wants.

However, I later found out that my passion for graphic design has always been there and thus, transitioned back from engineering at Cardiff Univerisity to a HND in Graphic Design and Photography. Ooh, and I also picked up photography as a side hobby of mine too ;).

What made you think about transitioning from Engineering to Graphic Design?

I have always wanted to create things. Some of my earliest memories of when I was a kid were creating and drawing things from my imagination. Mostly Hot-Wheel cars, but I also did manage to create some cool art when I was much younger. This carried on with creating things for Product Design and my true interest, graphic design. Creative Media was something that I was also interested in, but it was already adding a lot of things to a busy schedule.

Anyway, thanks for reading my bio and I hope to meet you sometime in the future!
