Purpose of the job
To improve the experience, uptake and access to council services through the delivery of user-friendly, high quality, accessible and engaging materials. As part of the team responsible for creating visual design and artwork this is a key role within the in-house creative team (known as Bristol Design). Working closely with communications colleagues, the creative team is a centralised resource, supporting a range of teams, including regeneration, sustainable travel, culture and public health.
The role is focussed on the conceptualising, developing and delivering designs for a range of digital and print channels.
Role and responsibilities
- Provides design advice to enhance briefs. Consideration should be given to diverse audience needs, as well as service-level, corporate and political priorities.
- Follow design processes to deliver engaging products. Design tasks will cover a breadth of design disciplines including concept development, editorial design, infographics, cartography and illustration. Design outputs will include materials for exhibitions, events, campaigns, commercial sites, digital channels and service delivery.
- Collaborate in other areas of design including content, video, motion graphics, digital design and marketing. As well as supporting the usage and management of the council’s portfolio of brand identities.
- Manage multiple (internal and external) tasks and client relationships at a time. Paying strict attention to detail and working to agreed plans. Advising clients of progress and costs, as well as escalating issues and risks promptly.
- Work closely with suppliers to raise orders and organise print. Maintain accurate, organised, up-to-date job records and files.
- Ensure all their output meets legal and best practise standards relation to quality, accessibility, product placement, data protection and is reflective of the diverse city of Bristol.
- Aim to continuingly improve the quality of design output and participate in collaborative ways of working such as peer reviewing. As well as highlighting opportunities for cost savings and income generation.
- Incorporate relevant innovations, best practise and trends into own design work.
Required skills
We are looking for someone to join the creative team at the heart of the council, who has the following skills and experience:
- Strong design skills with professional experience delivering both print and digital products.
- A good understanding of accessibility in design
- Highly organised and flexible to manage multiple design briefs
- Confident collaborating and communicating in a professional environment
- Confident following processes to ensure high levels of accuracy
- Committed to learning new skills and incorporating the latest innovations into your work

Additional Information
The council offers a hybrid and flexible working pattern. With some required working from City Hall (College Green), travel within Bristol for site visits and occasional working outside of office hours.
