Last September we trialled our first BCI Walk & Talk session in the Mendips, and it was a great opportunity for members to make some new connections within the industry whilst getting some much needed fresh air. As the world opened up once again, we were keen to offer our members more creative ways of networking, so we teamed up with Outside to organise these sessions with groups of 12 people (similar to our members’ lunches) who are keen to don their walking boots and explore the stunning countryside around Bristol and Bath.
Our members’ lunches have long been a firm fixture in the BCI events calendar – the perfect opportunity for a small group of members to connect and exchange information about their businesses. That said, these sessions are way more than just pitching; they offer a shared space for connecting with your peers to share successes and discuss challenges. These lunch sessions are continuing as normal every month throughout the year, but we’re currently getting more dates in the diary for the walking sessions too, starting from different locations around the area on a quarterly basis.
The location for this Walk & Talk will be the Woolmers and Cleeve Hill circular walk, which is roughly a 9km loop. We’ll meet in the car park along Cleeve Hill Road (BS49 4PH) ready to leave at 9.30am.
Over the course of a 3 hour circular walk, you’ll get to spend 10-15 minutes chatting to each of your fellow walkers. No agenda as such, just clear open space for thinking, connecting, sharing experiences and exploring possibilities. The BCI team will be joining the group too so it’s a great chance to chat to them about getting the most out of your BCI membership.
This event is exclusively for BCI members and registration is required in advance via the button below. For those who are also members of Outside, this event is free of charge. If you’re not a member of Outside, the cost will be £10+VAT.

The climate emergency and social inequality are profound and pressing problems, thrown into sharp relief by the COVID crisis, that can only be solved if we harness the enormous potential of entrepreneurs, innovation and enterprise.
The world needs business at its best – creating good jobs, helping to fix pressing problems and adding value to society. But at precisely this point in history, trust in business is low and examples abound of poor governance leading not just to poor business outcomes but harmful damage to communities and the environment. We don’t need to accept these outcomes as inevitable, but rather strive to do better in our boardrooms. Voters, consumers and investors expect this now. Research shows that UK voters and consumers want business to do better. Three quarters of the UK public think business has a responsibility to protect the environment and the majority favour brands that do good in the world.
What do we mean by better? This means freeing decision-makers in business to act in everyone’s long term interests – combining traditions of good stewardship and responsibility with new ideas to meet the challenges of the 21st century. There is evidence that business in the UK has taken the lead in reforming its practices around purpose, but we need the statutes and policies to ensure these become the norm. Specifically, this means putting purpose at the heart of company law and the fiduciary responsibility of directors.
A small change in the law will make a big change in the world. It will allow businesses to make decisions in all of our long term interests, helping to create a fairer, greener future.
