This Event: Hacking the Herd Mind

Speaker: Ed Barter – Herdify

Understanding how people respond to content is vital to designing marketing campaigns that make an impact. But humans rarely think for themselves. As Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman put it “Thinking is to humans as swimming is to cats; they can do it but they’d prefer not to.”. Through social influence our friends, families, colleagues, and neighbours affect how we respond to marketing much more than we would ever give them credit for. In this talk Ed will explain the science behind social influence and how as marketers we can apply simple techniques to harness this herd mentality.

Agenda:

5:30 pm – Doors Open: Begin the evening with networking over drinks in a warm, welcoming setting.

6:00 pm – Kickoff: Introduction followed by insightful talks and interactive Q&A sessions.

6:45 pm – Continued Networking: Engage in meaningful discussions and connect with fellow attendees in a relaxed environment.

7:30 pm – Close: Conclude the evening enriched with new contacts, ideas, and perspectives in business.

Join us at the Plugged Series for an enriching night filled with learning, networking, and inspiration, all centered around the intriguing world of creativity.

JonesMillbank, a Bristol-based video production company, have been responding to tenders and public opportunities since 2016. Their ‘big break’ came in 2017 when they won a £150,000 contract with the University of Bristol. They were a team of 5 then, 14 today, and in that time they’ve done over £1mil’s worth of tendered work with the likes of the British Library, NHS England, VisitBritain and University of Winchester.

In this Wake Up Call, Russell Jones will rapidly cover some dos, don’ts and need to knows, from where the hell you find opportunities in the first place, to red flags, tips, tricks, how AI can help, and why this seemingly boring process isn’t all that bad and can have positive impacts on the normal pitching process.

This session will be particularly useful to owners of small digital agencies, pitch writers, business development, freelancers. Any creative/marketing/comms sector, from photography to SEO, web design and PR.

About Russell

Russell is one of the Co-Founders of JonesMillbank. Aside from film he’s also not terrible at writing, and so has found himself in the position of having responded to something like 50 odd tenders. Away from tenders he looks after ops and certifications, areas that naturally benefit from the sometimes rigorous, detailed process of tenders.

More about our ‘Wake Up Call’ webinar series

These sessions take place every other Friday morning from 8.30-9am, for the BCI community to share their pearls of wisdom with one another. The half hour webinars will involve a 15 minute presentation followed by a 10 minute facilitated Q&A, with introductions from the BCI team.

Our community is full of such amazing talent so we’re giving members the stage to talk about things that excite them so they can inspire their peers. The sessions will be a mix of expert tips and tricks and case studies – the perfect opportunity to learn something new before the week is out.

Our usual online format is an interactive ‘meeting’ but for this series we’re running webinars so that it’s easy to listen in while prepping for the day ahead or while having your breakfast! Cameras and mics will be off but you can ask your questions through the chat box or submit them beforehand.

Please get in touch with Sian if you’re interested in speaking at a future session.

Two of the biggest challenges facing the creative industries right now are a long-term skills shortage and a lack of diversity in the sector. The Bristol Creative Industries Internship Programme is tackling those issues.

In partnership with Babbasa and the OurCity2030 Pathway into Creative & Tech, the scheme gives young people aged 18-30 from underrepresented backgrounds real experience in the creative industries.

Interns complete two three-month paid internships over six months at businesses from the BCI member community in and around Bristol. The interns benefit from training, inspirational talks, networking events, mentoring and opportunities for future employment, with training in equity, diversity, and inclusion, mental health and neurodiversity for the hosting businesses.

Following the big success of last year’s pilot programme, we are looking for brilliant businesses to join us for round two. If you are interested in supporting this innovative scheme and helping to tackle the lack of diversity in the creative sector, join this online event on 1st February to find out more – register below.

A series of winter gatherings with author, founder and outdoor leader, Garry Pratt, at Campwell Farm near Bath

We all remember our childhoods outdoors; exploring in nature, hitting things with sticks, making dens, seemingly endless days outside with no screens to interfere with our imaginations.

Nowadays, competition for our attention is fierce and we have less time to decelerate, reflect, imagine our futures.  We’re driven by our to-do lists, rushing to pursue goals without questioning their value. We spend far too much time inside staring at a screen rather than outside in nature; the space in which we were in fact designed to think best.

Outside, our attention is restored. We have different conversations, create new connections, form new ideas. We sort out our thoughts and we begin to build our own, powerful, imagined futures.

The wintering sessions, dawn till dusk:

Session 1: Monday January 22nd
Session 2: Monday February 5th
Session 3: Monday February 19th

These sessions are organised by Garry Pratt, who is the author of “The Creativity Factor”, which emphasises the importance of creativity in business success and outlines how time spent outdoors can fully harness your creative potential. Garry and his business partner Al Kennedy run the very popular Walk & Talk sessions for BCI so be sure to look out for those upcoming dates too!
