Clifton Suspension Bridge completes biggest refurbishment in its 160‑year history

6th October 2026

After two and a half years, the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust has completed the largest and most ambitious refurbishment project ever undertaken on the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge, protecting Bristol’s most famous landmark for generations to come.

The multi‑million‑pound project, which began in April 2024, focused on protecting the bridge’s historic ironwork as well as installing a new, environmentally sustainable lighting system. Funded entirely through bridge tolls, the works represent the most significant conservation investment since the bridge opened in 1864.

The milestone comes fittingly on 1st October; exactly 197 years since the announcement of a competition to design a suspension bridge across the Avon Gorge. The winning design was the bold vision of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the engineering genius who shaped the bridge and secured its place as one of the world’s most celebrated suspension bridges.

Over the course of the works, specialist engineers from Taziker, the firm tasked with the refurbishment works, hand-painted more than 4,000 original iron chain links, many of which are over 180 years old. This careful conservation process will protect the ironwork from corrosion for the next quarter century, a vital requirement given the bridge’s exposed, tidal gorge setting.

Alongside this essential conservation, the project has delivered a modern lighting system designed to enhance the bridge’s nighttime appearance while minimising light pollution and improving energy efficiency. The new illuminations allow the bridge to be lit in special ways to mark significant moments in its history. Light displays have already been seen by passers‑by during the Bristol Light Festival in February and British Science Week last month.

The completion of the project was overseen by Tristan Ralph, Bridge Master of the iconic Grade I listed structure. Commenting on the completion of the refurbishment project, Tristan said: “Completing this refurbishment marks a defining moment for Clifton Suspension Bridge. As the largest project ever delivered by the Trust to date, it demonstrates our long‑term responsibility to protect Brunel’s extraordinary structure, with care, skill and sustainability at the forefront. Reaching this milestone during Brunel’s birth month makes it all the more special, reminding us why preserving his legacy matters so deeply.

“Unlike many historic landmarks, the bridge is privately owned and operated, and its upkeep depends entirely on the tolls paid by its users. Every person who crosses the bridge has therefore played a direct role in funding this vital conservation work, ensuring it remains open, safe and inspiring for generations to come.”

Jon Turton, Project Manager at Taziker, said: “This project has been a rare privilege to work on and one of considerable technical complexity. Protecting centuries‑old suspension chains in such an exposed environment required innovative planning, specialist expertise and an exceptional team effort. Working closely with the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust, we are proud to have delivered a refurbishment that secures the structure for the next 20–25 years, while respecting the integrity of Brunel’s original design.”

Throughout the refurbishment, the bridge has remained open wherever possible, ensuring vital connectivity between Bristol and North Somerset while allowing the Trust to continue operating entirely independently, without local or national government funding.

With final finishing touches completed, visitors and residents alike are once again enjoying uninterrupted views across the Avon Gorge, and a bridge that is now fully protected, refreshed and ready for its next chapter.
