McCann Bristol has created an emotive new brand campaign for St Austell Brewery and its flagship brand, Tribute, to reflect the pride, passion, and independence they both share with the local Cornish community.

‘The independent ale from the independent people,’ campaign pays Tribute to stand-out Cornish people who embody independence. The first phase of the new campaign features three strong and intimate photographic portraits – revealed only by the hands.

Cornish fisherman, Philip, Penzance-based local female rugby team founder, Cozette, and Cornwall-born musician, Mark all feature in the first phase of the campaign, which will be rolled out across both point of sale and advertising on billboards and digital channels, as well as featuring on the brand’s lorry livery in the coming months.

Laura McKay, head of marketing – beer and brands, St Austell Brewery, comments:

“Tribute is all about the people that make it. And for us, that’s drawing inspiration from our location and Cornish folk. In an honest and authentic way, through the new campaign photography, we’re celebrating the best of Cornish people and shining a spotlight on the hands that hold onto their passions.

“The new emotive advertising aims to create a stronger connection with Tribute’s target audience, communicating the importance we place on independence, endeavor, and achievement – characteristics reflected in both the brand and Cornwall itself. The spirit of independence is what makes Tribute unique.”

Zane Radcliffe, Executive Creative Director at McCann Bristol, said: “We’re as proud of this debut campaign for St.Austell as the Cornish are of their independence. We’ve captured that spirit in a series of striking and contemporary portraits of the hands that connect them to their individual passions and to the ale they prize so strongly.”

The campaign creative was shot by photographer Alex Telfer who boasts accolades including the International Photography Awards’ highly acclaimed ‘Photographer of the Year’.

Last month, the 2022 UK’s Best Workplaces™ in Tech list was launched by Great Place to Work® UK, recognising saintnicks among 140 ranked organisations.

What this recognition confirms about saintnicks:

saintnicks CEO Fraser Bradshaw commented, “Having received recognition as a UK Great Place to Work earlier this year, we are delighted to now receive this recognition for the diverse culture and mix of our capabilities within the agency. Every agency needs to invest in culture alongside its products and services if they are going to produce truly great work. We are looking forward to another strong year in 2023.”

As Benedict Gautrey, Managing Director of Great Place to Work® UK, explains:

“Now in its fifth year, our 2022 list showcases the largest collection of Best WorkplacesTM in Tech that the UK has ever recognised.

These results are based on what employees working in the technology industry have anonymously reported to us about their workplace experience. In a fast and ever-evolving industry, these organisations are at the forefront of ensuring employees have the right environment to thrive, they are focused on providing positive work experiences, they value diversity, differences and better ways of doing things and, importantly, are investing in effective leadership to ensure continuous growth.

A huge congratulations to saintnicks for making one of our most prestigious lists.”

Torchbox, a leading digital agency for the not-for-profit / third sectors and founders of Wagtail CMS, is celebrating after winning a prestigious accolade at the 2022 Employee Ownership Association (EOA) Annual Conference.

The company, which became employee-owned in 2019 and which has offices in Bristol and Oxfordshire, scooped the EO Stories 2022 Delivering Good Leadership award at a Celebration Dinner at the ACC in Liverpool after coming out on top in a public vote.

It showcased in its entry how, having been founder-led, it set out to become more sustainable for the future after transitioning by finding ways to develop leaders across the company.

Torchbox transformed the way it works so employees can play a crucial role in its success – investing in training and leadership coaching to ensure the team leads and inspires each other.

These changes in leadership and culture helped make Torchbox more sustainable, with better communication, and with increased productivity, enabling it to double its profit margin and become financially free within three years.

Torchbox CEO James Leavesley said: “Winning this award for the Good Leadership category is the icing on the cake for a significant year for all of us at Torchbox, as we are celebrating becoming financially free two years early!

“Our business has fundamentally changed; not only in our constitution and funding but most importantly in our mindset. Each and every one of us are owners and our focus is on creating value for existing and future Torchbox employees.

“Like many agencies, we were very much founder-led, but over the last three years, we’ve been channelling this owner mindset to develop our people into leaders and custodians of the business. It’s a massive credit to the whole team for pulling together and working so hard. I feel proud of all we have achieved and excited about what’s ahead.”

In total, six businesses were crowned as EO Stories award winners at the EOA Conference Celebration Dinner.

The accolades highlighted best practice in ways in which businesses develop an effective employee ownership culture that leverages the benefits of employees having a stake and a say in the business.

The EO Stories 2022 competition celebrated the stories of employee-owned businesses and the impacts they are having on employees, the performance of the business, and on the economy and society.

The 28 insightful and inspiring stories submitted were put live for the public vote on EO Day, June 24, and thousands of votes were cast to establish a winner in each of the four categories – good leadership, good engagement, good governance or an outstanding EO culture.

Additionally, there were also two special prizes judged by EOA Trustee members and Celebration Dinner sponsors GLIDE and Gripple, and the President’s Pick award chosen by EOA President Patrick Lewis.

James de le Vingne, Chief Executive of the EOA, said: “The growth of the employee-owned sector in size and impact during such turbulent social and economic times highlights its relevance as a model for the future for the benefit of employees, business and communities.

“The impact of the sector is greatly strengthened by the stories people are willing to share, which aids the learning and development of businesses looking to activate their employee ownership.

“I’d like to congratulate Torchbox on its award and for the exceptional insight it has provided into one of the key pillars of good employee ownership – good leadership – which helps to unlock the potential of future employee-owners and businesses.”

You’ve got the degree in the bag, a cracking portfolio filled with beautiful, thoughtful design, a creative CV and brilliant references. You arrive at the interview ready to dazzle, only to find that they expect 2+ years industry experience and a catalogue of household names under your belt.

It’s no secret that the creative industry is hugely competitive. Sometimes getting a foot in the door can be the most challenging part. And how many times have we all heard the phrase: it’s not what you know, it’s who you know? How many of us have been asked to work for ‘exposure’ or offered unpaid work experience?

We know it’s hard out there and we know that’s the industry’s responsibility, not yours. So while you continue to make out-of-this-world work, we’ll keep creating opportunities to get it seen.

And here’s one we made earlier…

The Design Awards

The South West Design + Digital Student Awards were launched as an initiative to tackle how institutions approach design education. To get them thinking less about individual projects and more about the creative careers beyond.

The awards give third-year university students an opportunity to submit their innovative designs, win cash prizes (and who doesn’t need cash?), network with potential employers, get a portfolio review and win a paid placement at Proctor + Stevenson.

As well as having their designs shared with industry experts, all finalists are in with the chance to win a paid placement at Proctor + Stevenson, with the opportunity to extend. Runners up will receive £1k cash each, and the Ultimate Creative Champion will receive a whopping £4k cash.

When is the ceremony?

Once you’ve entered your designs (see entry guidelines), your submission is now in the hands of the gods (judges), who will be announcing the 10 finalists on 16 June 2022.

The finalists will be required to attend Proctors HQ in Bristol on 23 June 2022 for a day of interviews for the placement prize, followed by an awards ceremony and, from 6pm, a party with food, drinks, and dancing.

Some of our biggest clients will be there as judges and esteemed guests, along with the Proctors team, for your opportunity to network and celebrate your work.

Beth and Ian have been selected to judge the National Startup Awards and the British Business Awards 2022 respectively.

The National Startup Awards have received over 2,500 applications in response to the first-ever call for entries and over 800 startups from the nine nations and regions of the UK have been shortlisted. Beth has been asked to be part of the team reviewing, deliberating and awarding the finest entries from the South West. This not only taps into her knowledge of this sector and the challenges and opportunities that come with it but also our desire to champion everything that’s great about the region we’ve made our home.

Ian will be part of a British Business Awards panel judging SMEs across 10 categories. Now in their fifth year, these prestigious awards recognise and celebrate the innovative and outstanding achievements of small and medium-size British businesses across all industries. This lifeblood of our economy is also a hotbed of real innovation as previous winners have demonstrated. Our work in helping to ignite brands at this stage of growth puts us in good shape to be part of this event.

Winners from both events will be announced a little later in the year.
