The Role:
We are looking for a senior manager to oversee our scenic workshop and everything within it. The Head of Workshop will look after everything workshop-related from project kick-off through to delivery. Our workshops include carpentry, metalwork, scenic, and technical departments, as well as our warehouse full of exciting sets and props! We will be looking to this role to deliver the highest quality scenery within the budget allocated and on time within our busy schedule.
This is a Full-time onsite role of 40 hours per week
Key Responsibilities
- Project Delivery: Responsible for all set production from creative sign-off through to delivery.
- Budget Management: Deliver all set production on budget and with an eye for a high-quality finish.
- Team Leadership: Line manage, oversee and support our workshop team of department leads in carpentry, scenic, metalwork, technical and warehousing.
- Scheduling: Plan the workshop schedule to ensure a flexible and robust workforce, whilst bearing in mind cost effectiveness and delivery timeframes.
- Quoting: Support the sales team, design team and head of production with quotes for workshop builds or external fabrication suppliers.
- Information gathering: Attend project kick-off meetings to obtain workshop information and brief relevant departments
- Operations Management: Oversee daily workshop activities, workflow, and resource allocation.
- Budgeting: Understand and track the workshop build budgets, flagging any overspends as they happen and making decisions on where to spend or save.
- Technical Expertise: Provide input on design, material specification, and construction methods.
- Technical Expertise: Knowledge of external suppliers for scenic construction
- Health & Safety: Maintain strict H&S standards, manage risk, and ensure safe use of tools/machinery. Ensure documentation is up to date and understood across the team.
- Resource & Stock: Manage materials, tools, consumables, and equipment maintenance.
- Strategic Input: Contribute to department growth, cost-effectiveness, sustainability (reuse), and potentially develop third-party work.
Required skills
Key Skills & Experience
Essential:
- At least 3-4 years of workshop or fabrication management level.
- Proven leadership in scenic fabrication and management of workshop teams
- Material knowledge in all fabrication disciplines
- Understanding of construction techniques, materials, and workshop processes.
- Connections within the local area for staffing and suppliers
- Excellent organisational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Background in quoting, costing and budgeting.
- Budget and time management experience – keeping track of budgets and ensuring projects are completed on time.
- Confidence in working with software and willingness to learn our scheduling system.
- Knowledge of construction processes and interpreting technical drawings.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects.
- Experience and knowledge with health and safety, specifically for workshop machinery, including spray booths and understanding of PPE, safe working systems and current regulations
- Commitment to safety and quality.
Desirable:
- Technical design skills
- Software skills such as SketchUp/CAD
- Experience in scheduling with float
- Engineering brain
- Experience of large-scale structural builds
We’re looking for someone with 3-4 years of experience in managing a scenic workshop or fabrication environment. You should have in-depth knowledge of materials and fabrication techniques, allowing you to advise on the most cost-effective way to deliver the builds of the high quality that we expect in every job.
