Against a backdrop of new working dynamics and AI advances, a new McCann Synergy study explores the ‘Truth About Work,’ and how organisations can use their own brand platforms to give staff a greater sense of purpose.
A new global study from employee engagement agency McCann Synergy, in partnership with McCann Worldgroup, has revealed that 61% of workers think that if their job disappeared no one would notice.
Previewing the findings at an event in partnership with LinkedIn in London last month, the ‘Truth About Work’ study drew on a survey of over 19,000 people across 18 markets, to reveal a range of insights including an imperative for work that is not just functional but personal, intentional, and deeply aligned with the values and dedication organisations extend to their customers.
The world of work has undergone a radical transformation in recent years from hybrid working to the influx of ChatGPT, but with 61% of young people planning to change jobs in the next two years, retention is the new truth to tackle. Creating employer brand experiences that engage employees – mirroring the quality and delivery of EX and CX – will help brands unlock growth and retain employees.
Nicky Clark, Client Director at McCann Synergy, said: “Our study reinforces the critical need for organisations to realign their brand purpose with the everyday lives of their workforce. When employees understand the connection between their role and a company’s mission, the impact is transformative. As an employee engagement consultancy, we find that working with leaders that recognise the value of a strong workplace culture is a real game changer – when brands get this right, employees flourish, innovation grows and organisations are more successful.”
Fernando Fascioli, President, McCann Worldgroup Europe & UK, added: “Organisations thrive when they put their customers and employees at the heart of all they do. As a creative network, McCann Worldgroup’s mission is to help clients unleash their brand purpose to earn a meaningful role in people’s lives. To remain competitive brands must extend this ethos to their employees and create brand experiences that can engage, delight, and drive a sense of shared purpose.”
Connecting to brand purpose has always been an external customer driver and the need for purpose is widely seen as business critical across the advertising industry. Between 2012 and 2022 the importance of brand purpose in Cannes Grand Prix wins increased by 71%. However, brand purpose has become decoupled from the lives of the people who build the brands from the inside, and 1 in 2 employees globally believe their job feels pointless.
McCann Worldgroup partnered with LinkedIn, the world’s premier professional network, who have been at the forefront of the future of work and employer branding to launch their Truth About Work study. At the event in London, they were joined by panelists Joe Ryle, Director of the 4-Day Week Campaign and Media & Comms Lead at Autonomy; Stephen Adeoye “Corporate Steve” TikToker and Founder & CEO of Beyond Education; Kate Waterfall Hill, Leadership Coach and Tiktok Creator; and LinkedIn’s James Gill, to explore how brands can use their brand platforms to amplify and energize their employee experience and engagement strategies.
James Gill, Senior Director – Head of Agency Development & Marketer Education at LinkedIn EMEA & LATAM commented: “In a world that is constantly evolving, it’s crucial for us to embrace change, adapt to new realities, and envision the possibilities ahead. Our approach to life, work, and growth have fundamentally shifted in the wake of the pandemic.
“At LinkedIn, we recognise the profound impact of these changes and we’re delighted to collaborate with McCann Worldgroup to explore the future of meaningful and impactful work, and shine a spotlight on the importance of adaptability, reskilling, and life-work balance in the future of work.
Although working culture and talent retention might feel like buzz words, employees who said they understood how their role fitted into their company’s mission were most likely to rate themselves as 1.7x happier. They also self-rated themselves as 1.6x more productive, showing that engaging employees can have a big impact on company profitability. In a time of constant change, employers who harness their brand platforms internally will create a culture of purpose and productivity that will support their employees and customers alike.

Laura Wildish, Head of Marketing, Good Energy said: “Heat pumps are a real hot topic right now. With the increase to the grant, and as people are turning their heating on, lots of people will be thinking about making the switch.

McCann ploughs ahead with next phase of campaign for Britain’s largest organic dairy brand
Yeo Valley Organic, Britain’s largest organic dairy brand, is set to launch a new above-the-line campaign as part of its carefully crafted masterbrand advertising activity, created by McCann Bristol. Leveraging the creative line “Yeo Got This!”, the multichannel campaign aims to give people the confidence to make good choices for themselves and the planet, every day.
The creative will be appearing in out-of-home channels, supported by a radio sponsorship with Magic Radio and social content. Further bursts are planned throughout 2023 along with exciting partnerships, experiential and in store activities.
Yeo Valley Organic Brand Director, Niall McKee said: “We’re delighted to see our masterbrand campaign starting to gain in momentum as we head into the autumn. We want this campaign to give everyone the confidence to make good choices for themselves and the planet every day. Our campaign is a little fist bump of encouragement.
“The latest activity is certainly timely for us as a brand. According to latest data from Deloitte, there has been a sharp increase in the number of people who have adopted a more sustainable lifestyle in the past 12 months. It’s therefore important that we actively demonstrate how we’ve been pioneering this movement for over 25 years, and it’s central to everything that we do.”
Talking about the brand platform, McCann Bristol’s Executive Creative Director Zane Radcliffe explains: “We landed on a truth that most of us have good intentions when it comes to making choices that are good for both us and the planet. But we’re not all Greta Thunberg, and it can be difficult to know how to make a positive impact. Yeo Got This! reassures us that we can all do our bit, even if it’s just popping an organic yogurt in our shopping baskets.”
The campaign builds on the insight that Yeo Valley Organic has been making good choices for over 25 years as an organic and sustainable business: prioritising nature friendly farming, animal welfare, and not using artificial fertilisers or chemical pesticides.
Radcliffe adds: “We’re helping people make positive choices in an effortless, fun and informative way.”
McCann Bristol won the work through a competitive pitch process last year, and it marks an exciting new era of growth for the organic dairy brand as it raises awareness of its regenerative organic farming credentials.

McCann Bristol has created an emotive new brand campaign for St Austell Brewery and its flagship brand, Tribute, to reflect the pride, passion, and independence they both share with the local Cornish community.
‘The independent ale from the independent people,’ campaign pays Tribute to stand-out Cornish people who embody independence. The first phase of the new campaign features three strong and intimate photographic portraits – revealed only by the hands.
Cornish fisherman, Philip, Penzance-based local female rugby team founder, Cozette, and Cornwall-born musician, Mark all feature in the first phase of the campaign, which will be rolled out across both point of sale and advertising on billboards and digital channels, as well as featuring on the brand’s lorry livery in the coming months.
Laura McKay, head of marketing – beer and brands, St Austell Brewery, comments:
“Tribute is all about the people that make it. And for us, that’s drawing inspiration from our location and Cornish folk. In an honest and authentic way, through the new campaign photography, we’re celebrating the best of Cornish people and shining a spotlight on the hands that hold onto their passions.
“The new emotive advertising aims to create a stronger connection with Tribute’s target audience, communicating the importance we place on independence, endeavor, and achievement – characteristics reflected in both the brand and Cornwall itself. The spirit of independence is what makes Tribute unique.”
Zane Radcliffe, Executive Creative Director at McCann Bristol, said: “We’re as proud of this debut campaign for St.Austell as the Cornish are of their independence. We’ve captured that spirit in a series of striking and contemporary portraits of the hands that connect them to their individual passions and to the ale they prize so strongly.”
The campaign creative was shot by photographer Alex Telfer who boasts accolades including the International Photography Awards’ highly acclaimed ‘Photographer of the Year’.
McCann supports Forth with the launch of ground-breaking female hormone mapping blood test
October 2022: McCann Bristol has created a new TV campaign to support the launch of MyFORMTM, a ground-breaking female hormone mapping blood test from Forth.
The ‘Warrior’ TV and social campaign fights against the societal pressure on women to soldier on and brush off any symptoms of the menopause they may be experiencing, highlighting how MyFORMTM can provide the information that women need to end any uncertainty around their symptoms.
MyFORMTM involves a two-step blood test which, when combined with AI mathematical modelling and clinical analysis, maps how the four key female hormones fluctuate across an entire cycle. Forth then provides a report on hormone function and ovarian responsiveness, which can indicate whether they are in perimenopause or not. The report can then be taken to a GP to support diagnosis and help manage any symptoms.
Melissa Down, Creative Director at McCann said: “We are thrilled to be launching a ground-breaking, category-first product in women’s health. Our ‘Warrior’ campaign shares a powerful and emotional metaphor, visually showing the lonely battle women face to soldier on through the difficult and confusing signs of perimenopause.
“We have an array of amazing female talent across McCann that we are fortunate to be able to draw upon, and for this campaign, we created a team made predominantly of women, including those who are of perimenopause age, in order to provide a unique insight into the product and a deeper connection and understanding with our audience.”
Sarah Bolt, CEO and Founder at Forth, added: “As a woman who has experienced perimenopause, I instantly connected with the creative idea behind ‘Warrior’. For too long women have been asked to suffer in silence and have been unaware of the changes happening within their bodies. Our mission at Forth is to empower women to become experts on their own body through scientific knowledge and understanding. The team at McCann instantly connected with our mission and showed their passion and understanding of the product right from our first meeting.
Louise Balmforth, Head of Growth at Forth, also commented: “With this being our first TV campaign for what is quite a complex product, the creative narrative had to be carefully curated. Not only is perimenopause still a sensitive topic for some women, but many do not realise their symptoms are due to this early transition to menopause. We wanted to create that light bulb moment in a sensitive way that positioned Forth as the light at the end of what can be a very dark tunnel for women. McCann impressed from the start, immediately getting under the skin of the brief and the challenge we are wanting to address in women’s health. We are very excited to see our product reach a wider audience of women who are living with the uncertainty of perimenopause.”

With 81% of people in the UK today saying that creating a well and healthy world is the biggest challenge of the 21st century and 52% of people in the UK saying that they have felt more unwell since the beginning of the pandemic, the immense scale of the task ahead is very clear.
To further explore this growing challenge, last week (April 28th), McCann Bristol and McCann Synergy hosted the second Talks on Toast event of the year, Truth About Wellness.
Hosted by Kathryn Ellis, Managing Partner, Strategy at McCann Bristol alongside Rodney Collins, Director at McCann Worldgroup Truth Central and Chloe Foy, Behavioural Strategist and ACC Coach at McCann Synergy, the event uncovered research based on 10 years of trended global data about the shape, role and meaning of wellness in consumer lives across 26 global markets – uncovering insights around mental, physical, emotional, financial wellness and much more.
Focusing on wellness both today and tomorrow, the research timeline demonstrated huge shifts in consumer behaviour from before the pandemic through to now. A large emphasis was placed on how far wellness has come in the last decade and the importance that is now placed on this for both customers and workforces.
With 74% of people saying they’re definition of wellness has evolved in the past year, what does it mean to be ‘well’ in today’s world? The insights uncovered suggest wellness remains multi-dimensional, however the definition of wellness we are familiar with needs to expand. Rodney talked through the eight dimensions of wellness including; emotional, financial, spiritual and social, with the focus drawing more now on how a sense of lack in one area can negatively impact another.
Rodney commented: “We’re really noticing that in the past 10 years what has shifted is that each of these dimensions appeared to exist in a silo, there was no mention about how ones mental health could impact ones physical health, how the bacteria in our stomachs affect how happy we are, how loneliness increases our chances of developing heart problems, or how the hitting costs of urban ride sharing is increasing environmental pollutants, which in turn are driving higher rates of Asthma. So the wellness conversation today has really become expansive, interconnected and networked.”
The discussion continued by identifying the erosion of this siloed approach, delving into the evolution of the wellness conversation and addressing five key additional shifts brands and businesses should foster and strive for to ensure a positive wellness evolution in the workspace.
Talks on Toast is a quarterly event hosted by McCann Bristol, delivering insight and global research at a local level based on key global topics.
