Pension Awareness Week: 10.7 million are too confused or busy to think about their pension

15th September 2026

Words on Wealth is offering three local businesses a free 30-minute Workplace Pension Check-In session for their employees this September,  as part of Pension Awareness Week (15th-18th September).

If you’d like to bring one to your team, send me a message with a little bit about your organisation and I’ll be in touch. I’m taking expressions of interest until Friday 18th September for businesses who can arrange a session during the remainder of the month.

Pension Awareness

Let’s be honest, pensions aren’t the most glamorous of topics. However, government findings suggest that 15 million adults are not putting enough away for retirement, with 45% of working age adults not putting into a pension at all.

We’re all living busy lives, with so many competing targets for our attention. MaPS found that nearly 10.7 million UK adults are  ‘either too confused or too busy to think about their pension’.

What’s the effect?

This impacts both how much people are putting away in their pension, as well as how they approach their existing pensions. If they don’t understand either, they don’t feel confident in making decisions that could benefit their future. This has a particularly great impact on women.

The pension gap starts from the beginning of their career, where women start with 16% less in their pension. This gap grows bigger until retirement age, when women have around half the amount that men do in their pension pots.

Perhaps these figures aren’t surprising given that just 8% of women claim to fully understand how pensions work, compared with 24% of men.

What can be done?

Time and headspace are precious in our busy, modern lives.

72% of UK workers say they’d welcome more pension guidance from their employer.

Simple, engaging and jargon free talks can kickstart a foundation of knowledge. Allowing employees to access an ongoing service for when questions arise, or financial situations change can help to boost confidence of a more robust retirement plan.

Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will pension knowledge. Closing the pension gaps and increasing workers confidence in their retirement plan has to be done regularly. But the stoner you start, the easier it is for busy minds to start taking on the information.

As part of pensions awareness week, Words on Wealth is giving away three 30 minute sessions for local businesses on pensions.

Zoë Burt, Founder of Words on Wealth says:

“As a complete pensions nerd, I absolutely love talking all things pensions. They’re complex financial products that we’re never taught how to manage. We’re given lots of help at school to understand options such as uni choices, when in reality, the time we will spend living of retirement funds may be 4-5 times the length of this period of time. It’s time we start to make changes to pension knowledge”
