Today we’re handing over the blog to Taylor, our amazing Summer Intern at Carnsight! It’s been absolutely fab having Taylor for her internship, and lovely to see the creative ideas and fresh takes she brings!
For this week’s blog, we’re giving Taylor the floor to chat about her experience so far.
Hello, I’m Taylor and this has been my first week at Carnsight Communications for my role as summer intern. In my first week at Carnsight I have already learned so much and have been lucky to work with the most incredible team of women who have helped guide me through my first week in the office (especially Ellen).
Driving up to the Carnsight office I was unusually calm. Obviously, I had some nerves but for me I felt extremely comfortable, which was so nice as normally I’m a nervous wreck. Having the opportunity to meet the whole team during my interview and seeing how warm and kind everyone is definitely helped with my first day jitters. Everyone was so welcoming and kind showing me the ins and outs of the office. Account Manger Ellen introduced me to everything I needed to know about the company and spoke to me through all the different roles and clients Carnsight takes on.
My first task at Carnsight was to create some Instagram graphics for Carnsight’s Social Media, introducing myself as well as writing a blog post for Carnsight’s website: Two Minutes With. This is a blog series Carnsight uses for new team members to introduce ourselves. I have to say I’ve never felt at home so quickly, with every single member of the team going out of their way to help and assist as best they can.
During my second day, I created a media deck with social media post ideas to help boost Carnsight’s brand visibility, as well as creating some Instagram graphics for my favourite post ideas. My third day I handled tasks like writing a blog post on functional health for one of our clients, Birchwood Care Services. Linking on to that, on my final day of my first week I created some new graphics for Birchwood’s social media. I also created a graphics post for Carnsight’s social media for the Three on Thursday coverage celebration series, where Carnsight celebrates their top coverage for their clients each week.
I’m very fortunate in the fact that I have an undergraduate degree in Fashion Branding and Communications as well as studying for my Master’s degree in Marketing and Brand Management. My undergraduate degree has helped me during my first week of my summer internship. During my undergrad is where I learned to grow my creative skills, which comes in handy when helping to create graphic and social media post images. My Master’s degree has helped as well, as without it I would be lost when looking into the business side of a company (My mind has always had more of a creative look on life).
In my first week I found the writing tasks to be a little harder than I anticipated. Trying to capture the right tone for companies you have only just gotten to know can give you a little bit of writer’s block. However, I found doing deep dives on their social media accounts and websites allowed me to push past and create some strong pieces of writing,
Before starting my internship, I didn’t have a true understanding of how much a team works with clients, and that PR is so much more than showing off clients. PR combines everything one would think about marketing, and gaining good PR relationships is key to a company’s success.
Overall, my first week at Carnsight has been amazing and I am so excited to see how the rest of my internship goes. The women I am having the opportunity of working with to guide me in the first steps of my career are fantastic and I can’t wait to learn so much more from them.
Thanks so much for sharing, Taylor!
